Boxpark in Shoreditch, East London, was set up in 2011 as the World’s first pop-up mall. It is made of stripped and refitted shipping containers, creating unique, low cost retail units, suitable for pop-up stores.
Brands represented include OnePiece, Smiley, Marimekko and Urban Ears. I’m not convinced it is entirely as intended. The stores are small and quirky, but they are expensive and some are established brands. In fact, Nike has a large space upstairs.
This place is well worth a look for its unusual setting and good intentions. It is a lively space, with music and art events and a nice selection of eateries on the roof. However, I wouldn’t class it as true pop-up.
